Sunday Savings

I got a WOW out of the check out guy at the grocery store when my savings came up at the end of my purchase.  :)   A friend showed me how much money she saves playing the “grocery game” (thanks Caitlin!)and I finally couldn’t pass up the chance to play.  This website does all the hard work for you.  So I just save my coupon inserts each Sunday (no clipping, just file them under that date) and then the website matches up coupons to sales for maximum savings.  Today I hit a few stores but this is all from Safeway and King Soopers which are both large grocery store chains.  I tried Target too but found that not worth bothering with this time and I also stopped at Big Lots and picked up a few things I just recognized as great deals (not pictured).  So was it worth it?  YES.  So fun.  I chose which things I would purchase at each store and printed out the list and stuck pretty close to those lists in each store.  For maximum savings, you really ONLY want to buy what is listed but as I am pretty new to this and dont have everything I would need to make the items into meals, I am still purchasing a few extras.  Still though, check out the savings!

Store #1:

(photo of receipt deleted due to personal info on there-OOPS)

I spent $83 and saved $65.

Store #2

I spent $64 and saved $58.

This is the one that the check out guy said WOW.  :)

So I think I can get better at it, but am thrilled with the savings today.

An example of savings: General Mills cereals (honey o’s and such) were on sale 4/$10 so 2.50 each.  I had a coupon for $1 off 3 boxes so only bought 3 boxes making it 2.17 each box.  Then (I purchased a 4th gm product with another coupon) I qualified for $4 cash back at the register since I purchased 4 gm products total so the cereal came out to 1.17 a box.  Now this is pretty good in my book but I read that one mom a few weeks ago got cereal for 41 CENTS a box!  She bought 175 boxes!!!!!  LOL

I did buy some things I would not usually buy but I think they will be nice to have.

We sure do have a lot of brownie and cake mixes for example.  LOL  And I don’t usually buy fruity cheerios but put into snack baggies, they will make a nice snack at the park.  And I haven’t ever bought Peter Pan brand P-butter but who cares.  The kids won’t.  :)

And lots of fruits and veggies were on sale too.

I think I will usually only plan to go to one or two grocery stores and skip the others (although I think Walgreens can be worth hitting too but I didn’t make it there today).  And also, for me, all of these stores are within a couple of miles from me and are within about a mile of each other.  If I had to drive all over town, it wouldn’t be nearly as appealing!

So all the fresh stuff is stored away in the fridge and pantry but what on earth to do with all those cereals, mixes, pbutters, canned goods, and snack foods!  Tomorrow I will be busy clearing out our utility room to turn it into a pantry.  It already has narrow shelving all around it, just right to be a pantry…except that those shelves are currently filled with who knows what!  :)

  1. Way to go! A couple times, they’ve had to call the supervisor over to over-ride my order because I’ve apparently saved too much!! Love it!

Hey there, way to go. I have not figured out that game, but out here we have Winco and I tell you those are my daily prices. I also cut my shopping to 2 major trips a month and buy bread and milk only during the wks not shopping.
I hit Big Lots but do watch the expiration dates there – have found some things old and Winco prices are about the same and new items.
We are spending about $400/m for 5. Which I never thought was possible – since working do try and do left overs for lunch and of course all varieties of noodles work for the kids!!
