A Cleared Closet

We have a “walk-in” closet that is pretty much the tiniest closet we have ever had.  Teensy.  And it got so full and awful that we haven’t actually “walked in” in ages!  So while Rick was on this last trip, I totally emptied it and started over and now it is amazing!  So amazing that once I was done (it took several days!), I just laid across the bed and opened the closet door and stared at it for a good long time.  LOL  Not much left actually, but somehow I feel like I have way more than before because I can see it all and just pull out something to wear in a flash.  Every single thing in there fits and goes with something else and I like it.  :)

I sooo wish I had taken before pix but let me just put it this way.  Well, you could not actually walk in it.  And also, when I emptied it, it FILLED our bedroom.  Nuts.

Here is the best I can do for a “before”:

This is with about 1/2 of the closet emptied all over the bedroom and doesn’t even include the hanging clothes!  Looks like the closet barfed.  ;)   And even I can’t figure out how all this was in there!  LOL

So here are the after shots:

Basically, this is the whole closet…for both of us!  The closet would be bigger except we have a fireplace in our room and the chimney goes up through the closet which really cuts a lot of space out.  So the bar straight ahead does go longer than you can see, but you can’t access that very well because the chimney is in the way, so I stored out of season things on that side of the bar.  What you see here is Rick’s side to the left (his shoes are on a shoe rack under his hanging clothes), my shirts straight ahead with some dresses on the end, and to the right are some capris and skirts.  And that is IT.  :)   The boxes on top hold purses and out of season folded things like sweaters.

Rick’s side.  As a surprise to him, since he was out of town during this overhaul, I ironed all of his shirts so things are ready to wear.  I thought that might make up for the huge bag of his shirts and sweaters that I tossed.  ;)

My side.  My shoes are on a shoe rack under the skirt section.

And down there are things we can’t actually access very easily so I put off-season stuff back there.

Donated!  The trunk is deeper than it looks and this was a lot of stuff!  Good riddence.

And this was a total pain but really helped me decide what to keep and what to toss.  I tried things on and took a close up and a full length pic to help me know what I wanted to keep or toss and I am continuing to do this with what is left, when I get dressed each day.  Weird but true.  :)   My kids think I am so strange for taking pix of food all the time, now I take pix of myself all the time.  Of myself NOT smiling!  Because for some reason, I find it nearly impossible to smile while also holding the camera, aiming it right, and pushing the button.  Too many things at once.  But anyhow, this is helping me toss and keep.  :)

I have an armoire with jeans and tees and such that needs to be spruced up as well.  Anyhow, I love our new closet and actually feel like I have MORE now, not less!

  1. Good for you! I know exactly how that feels. I think that is a very clever idea to take a picture of yourself in the clothes. I have now learned that it is VERY difficult to take a picture of yourself, get the lighting right and keep it in focus. I love how you put all your white tops together. My clothes are arranged by color and I only have one white top in there, which I have never worn, but cannot seem to part with (just in case I may NEED to wear something white). I have a new rule, and it was very hard applying it recently, but I did. Whenever I buy a new top, I have to get rid of an old one. That way, I keep my clothes to a minimum and I keep the ones that I really like the best. I just love having an organized closet. It makes me feel good every morning as I get ready for the day.

I bet your hubby was thrilled!

  2. P.S. You look really good in blue and white!

oh my goodness ….. your closet looks phenomenal!! When are you coming to MN/WI area to do mine? (j/k) I think if I did that to our master bedroom closet I would have to call 911 as my husband would go into shock! :) In all honesty,I should try to get in there an clean it out, organize it a bit, and maybe even get rid of some of my clothes (gulp!). –but then what happens when I get rid of clothes that don’t currently fit and I finally make it to the day when they would have fit again. I don’t care that they would be out of style – gosh darn it they would fit again!!! (yeah right!!) :)

  5. oh now i LOVE cleaning out closets! (well, at least the part when i’m all done and can admire the organization).

your toss or keep photos are making me giggle, but despite that- it’s a brilliant idea.
